Opinion: 22 year old committed a serious mistake in joining chelsea, rather than West Ham

Malang Sarr joined Chelsea instead of West Ham from Nice on a free transfer in the summer of 2020.

The 22-year-old was a transfer target for Hammers boss David Moyes at the time but he favoured a move to Stamford Bridge (FC Inter News and Telefoot journalist Saber Desfarges).

At the time, Sarr’s decision was an understandable one.

Chelsea were challenging for the top four and the Champions League. Meanwhile, West Ham had just barely avoided relegation.

The French centre-back may well now be questioning the wisdom behind joining the Blues, however.

Will Malang Sarr regret joining Chelsea instead of West Ham?

It is clear that Blues boss Thomas Tuchel isn’t quite convinced about the 22-year-old’s quality.

That’s in spite of a fine loan spell with Porto last season.

Chelsea chased Sevilla ace Jules Kounde throughout the entirety of the summer transfer window (The Express).

Chelsea sold Kurt Zouma to West Ham and even without him and taking the failed swoop for Kounde into account, Sarr is still behind Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Cezar Azpilicueta in the centre-back pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

If he can’t get a game now for Chelsea it will be a big hint that his future lies elsewhere.
